Re: [MTC Global] Why academic publishers convince scholars to write books no one can buy

One option is to use eBooks, especially those available free. Usual tasks, such as assignments, quizzes or projects based on eBooks chapters will yield better results.  Yes, hard copies of books are out of fashion. Students will use a textbook only if the course was mapped closely to its chapters.

Today an average person creates and consumes more information than any time in human history. The internet, increased connectivity, 3G/4G Wi-FI networks and vast repositories of information freely available online has diminished the usefulness of printed textbooks. Textbooks and reference books are also very costly, hence they are becoming obsolete.  Use of digital content in academic course and program is the way to move forward.

Dear Sir
I agree that not many read the book cause they don't have patience at all. They feel it's boring.
But instead what I do in my sessions is i make they read the newspaper first. And translate into the local language which really helps to have patience. it also gives General knowledge to them what is happening and what not happening in the country. The also get idea of the meaning and framing sentence. it's becomes interesting also.

Dear Dr Pious/ Dr Datta

1. The reading habits of Gen Y and Gen Z have changed drastically thanks to smart phones. People simply do not have the patience
or time or inclination to read.

2. Not all topics interest everybody. That is another point.

3. In the era of Google, Internet, Twitter, Facebook - everyone is interested in writing - but not many are interested in reading.

4. As far as management programs are concerned, students are lured to read guides/ scanners which is sad because then they do not
value the text books.

5. Unfortunately there are far too many books on a particular subject. Now how many can a faculty read - let alone a student! Publishers thrust complimentary copies on faculty members but honestly it took me a while to understand the futility behind all this. Now I have no space left for new books so I have to politely decline any complimentary copies.

6. This semester I taught a subject called - Managerial Research Methods for MBA students. All the assignments/ tests/ case studies that I gave the students were based on the book by Deepak Chawla/ Neena Sondhi and students had to make umpteen trips to the library. Many of them told me that they had never visited a library earlier and they profusely thanked me for persuading them to go through the book. So unless we teachers use some creative ways of making students read text books it can be difficult to make students go through text books.

As regards conferences and research papers - to be very frank - I have become disillusioned. Though I do not wish to generalise, I have realised that many conferences are organised with a twin purpose -one for making money and second for fulfilling someone's KPI. In the name of review of a research paper submitted, many institutions reject papers arbitrarily with uncalled for acerbic comments. This dissuades people from submitting any more. I had one such personal experience with a research journal published from Gujarat. Later when I went through the previous issues of the same journal I found the quality of the research papers sub optimal and most of them were written by the faculty members of that institute in that journal.

Reading habits are dwindling fast...the quality of research is nothing great....these may be the reasons for declining interest in research papers,

Thank you Prof. Dutta,

This question is always in my mind.

I wonder millions of research articles/books being published by universities of well repute, but not read by common people.

One of the article written by German professor says 90% of the research articles are not read by the people who could use it for making a change.

Some scholars may give an answer to this?
