This Workshop will focus on providing an understanding of the behaviour of group firms, common causes of misaligned incentives in public firms and how corporate governance mechanisms can overcome such agency problems.  Special focus will be on firms in emerging markets and a study of the family owned group structure prevalent among such firms.  The course will highlight the area's importance for finance research, discuss existing empirical evidence, and highlight some important open questions for future research.  The sessions will focus on finance and growth, determinants of financial development, globalization, business groups, stealing, tunnelling and corruption and raising capital.  Research papers and cases will be discussed in detail for each topic.  Participants will be expected to read these papers in advance and take turns leading the in-class discussion.  The programme will facilitate mentoring by experienced professors and enable finance researchers to fine tune their research.
