[MTC Global] Why don't Indian states have separate flags of their own?

The states in India do not have their own flags because they are united under one central form of government. Everybody has treated India as a single nation. And in 1947 India became a sovereign under a single name and by 1950 most of the 562 Princely states surrendered their operations to the Indian Union.

The only state with a separate flag is Jammu and Kashmir which enjoys special powers under Article 370 of the Constitution. The Centre is also wishes to grant a separate flag to Nagaland under a treaty likely to be signed with the National Socialist Council of Nagalim (I-M).

Is there any provision in the Constitution that prohibits a state from having a flag?

There is no provision either in the Constitution or in the Flag Code that prohibits a state from having a separate official flag. A code for a new state flag similar to the National Code will require to be passed as a law. If such a code is planned then it will need the assent of the President. This is because the government will then have to consider the relation of this flag with the national flag.

Where can this flag be used?

That flag is not used in national ceremonies like Republic Day or Independence Day but on occasions like state foundation day.

Every time an Indian is asked about his origins the Indian tricolor should be at the back of his head and not the state flag of Maharashtra, Gujarat or some other state. Flag is the most important symbol for uniting a group. When we are one Why do we need differences?
