Re: [MTC Global] Cabinet clears plan to fail students in classes V, VIII

Thanks professor Kashapji.

The narration is very touching and unfolding the realities of life then existing.

But, we have Professor Keshap out of this.
What is the secret? What is the lesson?

Very obvious: dedication, determination and quest for excellence. Facilities are secondary.

EDUCATION IN OLD DAYS AND IN PRESENT ERA.

1. In olden days, when I was a student, there were no education aids. In my village, one bus used to come in a week. Whenever, there was a rain, the bus did not reach our village. So, during rainy season, it used to be no bus area (officially declared).

2. Rarely, there was a graduate in an area of about 50 to 100 km.

3. The children were beaten by the parents and the teachers too to attend the class and learn.

4. Size of the book used to be maximum 100 pages. And it was very difficult to read that too. Teacher was God. Parents or kith and kin never dared to face the teacher.

5. 6 paisa was my fee. And it was difficult for the family to pay this fee.  No books, no library.

5.1 I have not seen 10 or 20 paisa coin in city since long. But, I was standing at stationery shop in a village of Himachal Pradesh, a student came and demanded 3 ruled papers. The stationer gave and asked for 50 paise but the student threw 30 i.e. 3 10 paise coin and ran away.

6. Till 1980, ONLY the children of salaried people could afford to go to school. Businessmen or labourer's children could not afford it.

7. In 1980, the economy opened, thanks to Dr. Manmohan Singh, one of the greatest economist of the world. Then FDI started boosting the business and economy went up.

8. At one time, Income tax used to be 95% leaving just 5% income in the hands of the tax payers. This shows the scenario of education in India during those times.

9. NOW to the present era when children secure 90+marks.
9,1 Conventional Learning i.e. free learning in religious places and pathshalas or gurukuls is almost negligible.
9.2  TV, Google, Internet, Whatsup and other social media and electronic teaching aid impart lot of information.
9.3 Securing marks 90+ is accumulation of information and its presentation in the exam. What about wisdom?
Swami Vivekanandaji once said: Had I to go to school again, I will not feed my mind with the information that is running riot in my mind and is not useful for my practical life.

So, the environment and facilities for students have upped these days and securing 90+ marks should not be a surprise. It is possible. Good energetic food enables a person. Even the parents are good guides for the children. They are educated and guide. At that time, the father did not dare to enter the gate of the school. Why? Because he used to be illiterate and feared the educated. LEARN, UNLEARN AND RE-LEARN results in wisdom. Otherwise, education remains information only.   These 3 stages of Learning require Sam, Dam, Dand, Bhed as is written in our scriptures.साम , दाम, दण्ड , भेद

Unless there is paradigm shift from teaching to learning no amount of policy changes are likely to have the desired impact of preparing an educated and literate society .

I think that opposition to the issue of scrapping no detention policy is out of political considerations rather than the academic. Perhaps if such states ask for the opinion of their teachers, it will be in favor of the proposed amendement.

NEW DELHI: The Union Cabinet approved the scrapping of the no-detention policy in schools till Class VIII on Wednesday. The cabinet also approved the HRD ministry's plan of creating 20 world-class institutions in the country.

An enabling provision will be made in the Right of Children for Free and Compulsory Education amendment Bill which will allow states to hold back students in class V and class VIII if they fail in the year-end exam+ . However, the students will get a second chance to take another exam and pass. The bill will now be placed in the Parliament for approval.

Under the present provision of RTE Act students are promoted automatically to higher classes till class VIII. This is one of the key component of RTE Act which came into force on April 1, 2010.
