Re: [MTC Global] Why Skills Don't Trump Having Degrees?

Really a thought provoking statement, thanks.

"Skills pay the bills but still Degree Rules".

My take is:
  1. Talent hiring is a Herculean task.
  2. From the time immemorial degree, being a handy talent measurement tool, is recognized as a means of hiring because a degree goes with the idea of branding, accreditation, credential,  like an ISO certification. Though no degree can guarantee one's performance on job, it serves the purpose to a large extent about  80%-90% probability of acceptance for the desired job performance, say, (+) or(-) 2* standard deviation of the population about the (talent) mean. That is how the degree rules in the absence of any other highly reliable measurement.
  3. Skill on the job and degree in hand hardly go hand in hand. This is amply made clear in day-to-day worldly affairs.
  4. Naturally skills pay the bills, degree in such cases has no big role to play.
  5. skills and degree play their own role in commensurate with the demand of time and environment.

Unfortunately, I don't think so. A majority of high paying jobs are still reserved for only college graduates to apply to. Even though firms like Google
, IBM
and Ernst & Young have removed the requirement of having a college degree to even be considered for an open position, there are very few people who get hired into these established companies without that piece of paper in their hand.

There aren't even any public statistics on how many individuals are employed in white-collar jobs without a college degree.

I don't mean to suggest that its impossible today to get into a white-collar profession without a college degree. People with the proper skills and a plenty of experience in their field, but no degree, are still able to convince recruiters and hiring managers that they are the right person for the job.

But that group of highly skilled individuals in technology or professional services without a degree are few in number compared to their credential-wielding peers.

Skills pay the bills but still Degree Rules.
