A few months back, ICFAI University,Jharkhand has launched a part time PhD program in management for working professionals (min 3 years experience) . It needs the scholars to attend 2 spells of one week each at the University to do course work. We try to provide Research guidance thru empaneled Reserach Supervisors at the locations ,where they work. Besides, we plan to leverage technology to provide remote guidance. 

 

We got an excellent response from not only faculty members but also from corporates. I was pleasantly surprised to find that over 70% of the selected scholars are from corporate ( from companies like Microsoft,HP, LG Electronics,BPCL,HSBC Bank etc). Also, about 80% of them were outside Jharkhand. They traveled to Ranchi to attend Course Work program and stayed in hotels, at their own expense. While interviewing them  for admissions, I was happy to note that they are passionate on doing PhD in areas relevant for industry / society.

 

While for some of them are doing PhD is for self actualisation, quite some of them are planning to move to teaching,over a period time. It is a good trend, which B Schools/Universities can capitalise on, to acquire good faculty members.

In the past we had many discussions on the subject of Ph.D. – Industry Experience – Competency – Deliverables etc. At this point, I could foresee , that there is a strong need for exploring alternative models of doctoral education that best support different needs, experiences and goals around the world instead of traditional approach. There is a need for innovation –there is a real need for exploring new options.

 

I am confident that a meaningful discussions on the subject will definitely educate many  stake holders and hopefully catch the attention of many people in the capacity of influencing important decisions.
