RE: [MTC Global] CSR & More

Dear MTCians Happy morning to all of you.

My personal experience and observations of last twp decades working closely with development, corporate and Government sector show that exceptionally very few business houses in India like Tata Group are following CSR practices in true spirit and action. Otherwise for majority of the business houses CSR is a mechanism of saving tax and converting the black money into white.

The ancient Indian culture of giving donations and philanthropy is not being practiced by business houses in India in true sense. Majority of the business houses either have their own NGOs / charitable trusts or donate money under section 80-G of income tax to other NGOs, charitable trusts,  religious organizations etc. In first case they do little development work in their own NGOs / charitable trusts and popularize more. In second case by having internal understanding of tax saving as well as converting black money into white they either donate money to the NGOs / charitable trusts promoted by political leaders or the so called religious ambassadors of God.

In fact the section 80-G of income tax is a big factor promoting black economy in India and its post-effect like hawala market. Assume an imaginary situation in which section 80-G of Income tax wiped out from all kinds of organisations except  applicable for the donations Prime Minster Relief Fund and see and compare after one year the total amount donated in Prime Minster Relief Fund and the amount of previous year donated under section 80-G of Income tax to all kinds of organisations. And I am sure it will be a big variation.

After they have built their businesses and earned their glory, , every leader in the country craves for only one thing and that is the kind of respect Mr Ratan Tata commands. But this is the thing that is not earned overnight.  It is  built brick by brick by engaging deeply with the society they live in.
As rightly pointed out by CSR is at best a transition stage for the company. That is where you learn that there is more to business than profit margin. ....The real stage of development is when this becomes the mission of the company. ....not something you do once a while.

Dear MTCians,

It is important that CSR must be closely aligned to the concept, culture and practice of Corporate Governance and Business Ethics of the companies; otherwise, the whole idea of CSR can be abused by the pliable managements of the big businesses and the unscrupulous politicians and administrators in positions of power and influence.
