Case Against 17 UB Students Adjourned / Addec’s Envoy Remanded in Prison

UB Students Case Adjourned/Addec's Envoy Remanded
Hearings in the case between the state and some 17 UB students billed for Yesterday July 31 was adjourned to August 14, 2013 due to the absence of the prosecution witnesses. 4 of the students including Sigala Remy were not in court due to ill health. Bench warrants were issued for the other students who were not in court.
Meanwhile Addec's emissary Nanfack Alex (sent to Buea to investigate the death of a certain Ngu Lawrence) was amongst the students presented before judges of the Buea Court of First Instance yesterday. He was remanded at the Buea Central Prison after the judge requested that he presented a surety with a landed property, at best a land title. That property must be within Fako Division. The other option was that Nanfack Alex deposits the some of 1.000.000 frs (one million) as surety. Since he was unable to do the above he was handcuffed and taken to prison.
The Defense lawyer Barrister Keme Nicholas argued vigorously that the offence against his client, reportedly, spreading false information was a misdemeanor and 'bailable' in vain.
Meanwhile the President of Addec, Mbatoum Thierry who had earlier been summoned by a certain inspector of Police OP Mebara, escaped detention by hair's breadth following the intervention of his lawyer. He was forced to abandon his identity card and has to appear again today August 1st before the police officer.
Mbatoum Thiery told reporters that OP Mebara informed him that the State Council (Procureur General- Fomkoue Joseph) had ordered that he be detained without any arrest warrant. When the lawyer argued that he could not be detained, the policeman withheld his identity card.
Mbatoum Said the police investigator wanted to know how Addec heard about the death of Ngu Lawrence, why it dispatched an emissary to Buea, why UBSU's President Minang Ronald had to accompany Nanfack Alex, the relationship between ADDEC, UBSU, student leader Eta Satanley and other Non Governmental Organizations.
At the time of writing this post Mbatoum was on his way the State council's office…

Repetition does not kill. I maintain that the heirachy of the University or the official(s) who give(s) petrol bons (vouchers) to security men to go testify against the students in court are on this forum. CAMLIT. Let them speak up!

You want me to name names or tell you that the vouchers were 'orange' in colour? The amount and every detail?

Mr Babila, the time will come. Rest assured. For now, let the information be at the level of hints.

I'm preparing a report on what transpired at The Buea Court of First instance today in the matter between the state and the 18 Students. I hear the ADDEC envoy is been demanded a million frs or a land title as surety or he is simply remanded. I may not have to respond to 'motions de soutiens! to this or that person.

Have a good day profs.

I agree with Mr. Jumban. Journalists are expected to provide their readers with accurate information, not hear say that hints or suggests. Cameroonian journalists need to be more professional.

Mr.
Atanga:

I'm quite intrigued by what
you say: "Reliable sources are
hinting that some of the witnesses notably some security men
are reportedly being
offered petrol bons and other benefits by the University
hierarchy to encourage
them testify against the students." If your sources
are as "reliable" as you say they are, why would
they merely 'hint' on an accusation as serious as
the one you're putting at the door steps of the
university hierarchy? One would expect that  the phrase,
"reportedly being offered petrol bons
[vouchers??]", would not appear in your report, if
your sources were really that 'reliable'. The said
"reliable sources" would've told you clearly
that "Mr/Mrs/Dr So-and-so of the University offered
petrol bons [vouchers??] to commandant/lieutenant/ So-and-so
of the security forces on such and such a day and I have the
proof to back me up." Without wanting to give you a
lesson in journalism, which you seem to master so well, or
to hold briefs for the UB authorities, I'm just afraid
that allegations of this nature do not give some of us, who
are far from the scene of action, a clear picture of what is
really happening at UB.  Just wondering aloud.

Have
a blessed day.

 17 Other
UB Students in Court Today 31 July

Some 17 students of the
University of Buea are due to appear before judges of the
Buea court of First
instance today July 31 2013 for the continuation of hearings
in connection with
the February 6 2013 student unrest.

(This case is
unconnected to the one that saw the court jailing a student
leader and then
discharging 15 others).

The student leaders be
heard include, Njungwe Marcel, Ayuk Tabe Vitalis,Fritz
Enonji, Suh Ngwa, Wabi
Franklin, all detained at the Buea Central Prison for more
than two months now.
Student leader Sigala Remy now serving an 18 month jail term
is also involved
in this first case. An ADDEC official, Nanfack Alex who
travelled to Buea to
investigate the alleged death of a certain Ngu Lawrence,
UBSU's interim
President Minang Roland and the rest of the students who are
on bail are due to
be grilled by the Buea Court of First instance, making a
total of 18 student
leaders.

The 17 UB students have
been charged with the destruction of University property and
for taking the VC,
Dr Nalova Lyonga hostage, amongst other charges, while the
charge against ADDEC's
emissary Nanfack Alex remains unclear.

We have so far learnt
from reliable sources at the Buea court that but for last
minute changes, the
judges a reportedly preparing to cancel the bail earlier
granted Minang Ronald
and the others and then remand them in custody following
purported pressure
from the UB and the South West administrations and some
security forces who are
bent on seeing the students jailed.

During the just ended
governor's conference, SW Governor Bernard Okalia Bilai
said the administration
was not interfering in the court case or the university
crisis but would always
provide security forces if the University authorities deem
it necessary.

Reliable sources are
hinting that some of the witnesses notably some security men
are reportedly being
offered petrol bons and other benefits by the University
hierarchy to encourage
them testify against the students.

Some university sources
denied the claims arguing that the court was acting
independently.

 The University of
Buea students Union, UBSU on
its facebook page, called on students to be 'vigilant'
and for the
international community to follow up the trial which it
'is seeing as some sort
of muzzling of Student Unionism in Cameroon.'

Jailed Student in Poor
Health

In the same statement
UBSU said the jailed student leader; Sigala Remy is not in
good health. They
quote prison sources as saying, he is suffering from nose
bleeding, running stomach
and is growing weak and frail.' UBSU added that the Buea
prison dispensary
which it says is 'ill equipped has not been able to give
him appropriate
treatment.' At the time of writing this post, family
members to the detained
student leader confirmed that Sigala Remy was sick though
prison officials,
notably the Superintendant Mbime Lazare promised studying
the possibility of
sending him to hospital.

Today's trial of the
student we learnt would be in-camera as in previous
ones.
