Subject: RE: [MTC Global] Query regarding Post Doctoral Fellowship

Dear Abhay,
Congratulations on having completed your PhD.

First question that you need to ask yourself is "Why PDF?"
Now let me try and respond to your queries.

1.      How should it be looked for? (area)
Response: You have done a PhD in finance. So stick to Finance. If you can drop in a mail on what your thesis topic was, maybe you would get better advise.

2.      Where should it be pursued?
Response: There are hundreds of opportunities available globally. You can search on http://scholarship-positions.com/category/usa-postdoctoral-fellowships/ or http://scholarshipdb.net/scholarships/Program-Postdoctoral/Field-Finance. There are many sites that have vacancy announcements for pointed topics in empirical finance.

If in India, you can try ISB Hyderabad, IIT Bombay, etc. Most Indian institutions do not advertise for PDF positions. You can write to Finance faculty members and express your desire to work with them. More often than not, most premier schools have funded research going on and you may get lucky.

You may also try in smaller countries like Belgium where they do some really amazing work in Finance. Ghent University, for example. You may also consider Australian Universities.

3.      Time period for PDF
Response: Depends. Can be one year or more. Do not commit yourself to a longer time duration. You might end up feeling trapped. Try for a year. If the topic interests you and if your supervisor extends your contract, you can opt to continue.

4.      What can be done for existing job while pursuing PDF?
Response: You are a bit ambiguous here. What kind of job? Teaching or industry job? If industry job, then you have to quit and pursue PDF. To my knowledge, no organization would want to send you on a sabbatical unless your area of work is where the business has invested in. If you are a faculty member, you have to still quit unless you are working in a government institution and have permission to pursue post-doctoral studies.

5.      Financial requirements
Response: PDF implies that you will get a fellowship. So you will not be required to pay anything. However, please understand that the fellowship amount might not be very encouraging. If research is your passion, then money will not matter. The fellowship that you get will help you make your ends meet comfortably. Remember, post-doctoral studies is not for someone who believes in a luxurious student life. Post post-doctoral research though there are chances that you might land up in a good job.

Does this help?

Regards,
Praveen

Subject: [MTC Global] Query regarding Post Doctoral Fellowship

Dear All,

I have completed my doctorate in November - 2012, in Commerce (Finance) (fortunate enough for getting guide with high academic credentials). Further on, following my research interest, I wish to go for Post-doctoral Fellowship (India or Abroad).

I have a very meager idea about PDF. On this learned platform, I look forward to get some insight about PDF.

1. How should it be looked for? (area)
2. Where should it be pursued?
3. Time period for PDF
4. What can be done for existing job while pursuing PDF?
5. Financial requirements

I urge all expert MTCians to guide me through. I extend my sincere gratitude to all of you in anticipation of receiving your valuable inputs.

Regards,
