Re: [MTC Global] Academicians not working with corporates?

Dear all,
I agree that the collaboration between industry and academic is absolutely necessary for developing holistic management education in the country. I remember in eighties,  management students were paid stipend for summer internship of two months along with working opportunities for eight hours a day.
Today most of them  hardly get this opportunity of full eight hours working experience even  for a day or two .

In eighties,  most of us  were actively engaged in corporate training and consultancy as B_school faculty.

I as HR Head  have been inviting faculty for training of managers in our company and find that not even 5%  of them are willing and capable of designing and directing a need based training module.  We use lot of consultants for various interventions  but hardly any management faculty fits into that role,  except from IIMs or top Bschools, who are very expensive.

I think, all Bschool faculty should development atleast one area of expertise where s/he can act as trainer or consultant for corporates convincingly to be able to become effective  long term faculty. This will facilitate mutually beneficial academic industry interface and help in placement as well.

Regards.

I think Dr. Usha Gowri has  aptly put a corporate organization's point of view with regards to associating with academicians in different capacities. One other aspect that I had experienced as chairman of an institution is that whenever we requested executives from Industry to address our students in or the other context, they were willing to oblige without any expectation in return but we failed to take advantage of this acquaintance to convert it into a longer lasting relationship.  Long back in year 1984, I had introduced 'On Job Training' for management students of the University and as president of Indore Management Association, I was able to place all 60 students in different industry with a stipend. I had requested the Director to associate or more faculty members to interact as interface with the industry and the student and keep guiding the student as also making request to concerned executive to ensure maximum learning for the students. Since there was no move from the institution, this became a kind of part time Job for both the students and the industry and MBA program practically became a part time MBA. Net result was that the program died its own death within two years because students were left out to fend for themselves to find a job as the program was neither backed by IMA nor its members.

What are our academicians and their affiliating institutions short of ? Competence? Skill? Poor reputation?:

I was fortunate( unfortunate?) to work in two entirely different environments and can say this with a lot of conviction-the way the academician thinks and works is very different from the way a corporate manager thinks and works .Beginning with something as simple and complex as  language/lingo used to the  way a thought is constructed to the way it is  expressed   to the way we focus outcomes-all are poles apart.

So much so when I moved to the corporate world I had to unlearn re learn open communication,of expressing what I had  in mind openly and straighforward-ly. The  speed of work is unique .We work as individuals in academics-we better be teams in the corporate world.Knowledge is from the book and knowledge has to be coupled with skill and hands on ...I could go on.....We don't have registers because it is expected of  everyone to be  accountable and responsible-otherwise out you go. Tenure makes life cushy in academics.I can churn out a 20 years 'notes' in class- updating is the name of the game for survival in the  corporate both for the organisation and the individual .

Bridging this wide chasm requires dexterity. What the guy in the field requires is sharing of experiences-hard core experience  and to learn from mistakes. Academicians who went out and soiled their hands win hands down like say in the IIM where consulting is big time crown

Sorry. There are some textual errors in the previous post!

Unlike what is happening in Europe and USA, corporates are reluctant to take academicians into confidence and involve them in the research that relates to their business issues ( that  require research).

What are our academicians and their affiliating institutions short of ? Competence? Skill? Poor reputation?

If it is so, how can academicians reconcile( bridge) with corporates? If Indian corporates are not used to ( no culture of accessing academicians' skills) working with academicians, why not foreign companies that operate in India work with academicians.

Many corporate honchos that connect with this forum may deliberate on what academicians lack? Why Indian corporate don't need academicians' inputs vis-a-vis foreign companies on foreign turf work closely with academicians?
