Re: [MTC Global] [HQ] Sankalp-2014: The Mega Knowledge Sharing event of 2014. Register Now

Dear Dr.Tarun Das,

I fully agree with you that HRD Ministry is one of the core ministries and needs to be given due importance. With regard to your two basic questions my view is that - we are perhaps jumping the gun because- with all his vast experience as CM of a state Mr.Modi is unlikely to overlook the two basic points mentioned by you that too when he has just started his innings ( and Mr.Modi does not have any experience as parlamentarian since this is his maiden entry into the parliament ,which he must be very conscious about while deciding his first cabinet) . Certainly he must be having some clear plans in his mind and at this stage our reaction on Ms.Smriti Irani 's becoming HRD minister is a bit too early.

My only submission is that to head HRD ministry one need not necessarily be a distinguished academician. Also allotment of HRD ministry to Ms.Smriti Irani's is only a part of the total cabinet postings and right now we do not know what the big picture is as envisioned by the PM. Moreover, as we can guess PM is not having his full cabinet and there will be cabinet expansion shortly and we may see lot of changes in due course when we too can get few glimpses of the big picture and my appeal to all MTCians is let us reserve our views/comments now and lest us wait and see since we may change our views/comments in due course based on how the things emerge.

With very arm regards,

Dear Dr. Parthasarathi- I wanted to say that that the HRD Ministry is one of the core ministries and needs a better treatment. I have two basic questions. (1) was there no better candidate to lead the HRD Ministry in the Modi cabinet than Srimati Smriti Irani? (2) Was there no better ministry for Smriti Irani to utilize her experiences and expertise than the HRD Ministry?

We have seen enough of the so called Oxford and Cambridge educated economists in the last decade and the damage they have done to our economy by being at the helm of the affairs. Certain amount of basic education/knowledge is certainly needed to head any cabinet ministry. However, lack of such education need not be a disqualification to be a minister.

It is universally recognized that if all the citizens of an economy (best example is China) are well educated, well fed, healthy and live longer, they can contribute more to economic development, grain more from it and participate fully in the process of development. So education and health sectors are the most important social sectors for human development and their utilization. Formulation of effective policies for these sectors for the near, medium and long term requires many years of rich experiences and international best practices and vision, mission and strategic policies and priorities for future. We have got Dr. Harshvardhan as a very able Health Minister as judged by these criteia. Unfortunately, so such qualities are evidenced for the education sector by Smriti Irani who spent most of her past time as TV actress and a model. Can Professor V. Maruthi Rao provide an objective and more convincing reply devoid of emotions and personal sentiments?

I totally disagree with Dr.Tarun Das. If the HRD minister has studied up to 12 the standard only does not mean that education would not get due importance. Probably we may see a sea change in the policies towards the education sector. True we had some highly knowledgable and intellectually brilliant HR ministers but then the education sector barring some reforms has not seen any dynamic changes.

If it is true that Smriti Irani has education only up to the 12th Standard, the third largest economy like India in terms of PPP adjusted GDP deserves a better HRD Minister. This act shows the mindset and the  importance given to education by the Modi Government which probably wants to make India a country of lower class Babus.
