[MTC Global] Re: [MTC Globay to make moneynd Big Debate-II] Should you discuss your salary with your Colleagues

Prof. Ramesh's observations, views and proposals are right, a positive and healthy approach. But many
corporate houses and institutions operate differently, hiding or not making public the salaries of their
employees for one or more of the following probable causes:
1.
There is no robust and sound National Wage Policy in India.
2.
Jobs of the same difficulty points are paid not uniformly but differently at different places.
3.
The management believes in making different payments for the same job due to such factors as employee does
not bargain, employee is having less self confidence, easy to make (black) money (recruiters), to oblige
somebody. labor demand-supply rule, etc.
4.
Since normally we do not pay equitable pay for the same job difficulty points, disclosing salary may give
rise to disputes, conflicts, lowering the moral of employees. etc., creating a sort of fear in the
employer's mind.
5.
If as an employer I want to remain competitive in the market to attract talent, my competitors should not
know how much I am paying to my employees, payment policy. However, it is not difficult to get this data
inspite of lot of data security and confidentiality.
6.
A very few but key position employees are paid sumptuously, un-thought, but the extra payment is made in a
different mode including under the table. I recollect some of the seniors working in private institutes
during 1993-1995 period used to take half payment Rs 5000 by cheque and remaining Rs 5000 in cash. However,
I refused such a practice and total pay by cheque deposited in a bank.

I sincerely believe that open pay policy proves rewarding on long term basis, good for both employer and
employee.

Today, no employee works on an island. Watertight compartments are history.
It is all about TEAM WORK.
To y corporates and institutions follow some different mode of working probably because of the following
reasomana good team player, an employee needs to be transparent in all dealing & discuss everything
including SALARY.
We observe a plethora of conflicts in organization on salary justification.
Still, discuss your salary with colleagues openly, take suggestions, look at your job description,
job evaluation, job enrichment, offer opinions, ask for addnl responsibilities, action plan,,,,,,,,,,
Never get into a comparitive mode or take it personally if your own colleague is getting more.
It happens . ASK FOR A HIKE & DEMAND, IF NEED BE. You may or may not get what is expected;
Many a time, Management is unaware of a dissatisfied employee"s salary expectations because he or she has
not expressed it to any one in the organization.
He must inform the immediate superior or HR about it.
Those who ASK get what they want - law of nature.
