It is not a phenomena of forgetting. It is pen's structural and functional identity issue! Pens are similar in colour, shape and size. We keep them in different places and use it for different purposes. We cannot have a specific place to keep or make it marked as our's only. So the chances are high to get misplaced and lost. Again, if somebody noticed that there is a pen, he may not able to return because he does not know that it belonged to whom and no further identification, so keeps it to himself!
The cost factor makes that not bother about it.
when we have placed high value on it in the case of costliest pen, we may not lose it because we become consciously aware of it's whereabouts. However, we can not be cautious with 5 rupees pen because the psychological energy required to be aware of that amount is much higher than its cost price!
Similarly, you don't lose the 5 rupees pen, if it was a gift to you by your loved one (go back to your early adolescent and adult years!).
I lose my pen once in a week and never find them back!
By the way, pens are becoming redundant in this digital era!!

Forgetfulness can be quite distressing at times.

This is what happens in our life.
We are careful with things which we value most.
* If we value our health, we will be careful about what and how we eat;
* if we value our friends, we will treat them with respect;
* if we value money, we will be careful while spending;
* if we value our time, we will not waste it.
*if we value relationship we will not break it.
Carefulness is a basic trait all of us have,we know when to be careful!
Carelessness only shows what we don';t value...
So let';s be careful about our relationships and value them.
