University of Madras, a 175 years old univ., pays just rupees one hundred only to the guide and supervisor. mark the fact it is just one hundred only, even as of this mail being typed. And in the name of tightening the noose they have imposed many rules and regulations which have effectively stifled the guide. Only those directly working in the Univ depts., are the blessed ones. the aided colleges are the worst affected. we just continue to carry on due to the passion for research. Now with the new guidelines of 8 candidates per guide at any given point of time will ensure that the workload is counted and all faculty will be forced to guide in their respective universities only. This will settle the issue...--On Tue, Nov 25, 2014 at 7:47 PM, Babu Anto <bantop@gmail.com> wrote:DearsGuide getting honorarium for guiding the scholar is not a common practice in many universities. This practice I think is available only in private universities like Vinayaka University. I agree with the professor that Research guidance should be counted towards the teaching load of a teacher and accordingly he/she may be relieved from the normal teaching load. Research Guidance is a commitment one accepts when one apply for guideship in a University. This is ho the academic community progress by helping the next generation. We don't expect any monitory benefits from that. We are indirectly getting credentials and later may be cashed while applying for higher posts.RegardsDr.Babu Anto P

universities. Such practices are being followed in private, state,
etc. universities; though rare. For instance:
1.
University charges PhD fees but rarely guide gets his/her share
though there is such a provision.
2.
One of the universities from South India did not make my
remuneration for PhD evaluations (three theses). On the other hand I
spent Rs 100-300 towards VP charges, a case in 1996-97.
3.
Though University has charged fees to my PhD candidate, the
University did not pay me any honorarium, though there was such a
provision, a case in 2000.
4.
No teaching load is assigned for PhD work.
In such a scenario two things happen:
1.
The good guides get demotivated and they withdraw from the system.
2.
In the absence of good guides, some guides exploit the situation.
