[MTC Global] Education dept holds lottery for RTE seats

PUNE: The draw of lots for the 25% seats reserved in schools under the Right to Education (RTE) Act was held on Saturday for admissions in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad. Applicants will receive an SMS about the school allotted to them on their registered mobile number on Tuesday and they must confirm admissions by April 15.

The Pune regional director of education received as many as 13,782 applications from children belonging to the economically backward section of society.

The lottery was drawn at the Rajiv Gandhi e-learning centre in Sahakarnagar for schools that had received more applications than their seat capacity.

State director of education Mahavir Mane said, "We will send the messages to parents by Tuesday. Once parents receive the message, they will have to confirm the admission of their ward with the school allotted to them by submitting the required documents and filling the confirmation form."

Parents who had filled the RTE admission forms for their children were also present for the lottery. Mane said the seat allotments will be computerised. Abhinav English Medium School in Kothrud has received nearly 1,100 applications, the highest among all schools.

Regional director of education Dinkar Temkar said, "As many as 449 schools are eligible for RTE admissions in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad and over 13,000 applications were confirmed for admissions before the lottery was undertaken."

The total seats available in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad were 13,782.

Mane said, "The online scheme for RTE admissions is being conducted for the second time and schools that have admitted students under this scheme in the previous year will be reimbursed for the amount in the next two weeks."

No school can deny admission to a child, he added.
