The Meet started with the welcome speech by Mr Furkan. He has told the history of AIU and about its various duties, regulations and importance of meet.


Excerpt of Speech given by Dr Ved Prakash (Chairman UGC):

1.    He has given the history of Indian higher education system. He told Indian higher education system stared almost 2000 years back in 5 BC.

2.    He discussed several development in Indian Higher Education System till 2014.

3.    Development after 2014:

a.    Review committee has been developed in UGC and AICTE

b.    New National Policy of Education to be framed.

c.    Focus on Credit Based Review System

4.    He told uniformity of education is not possible. There must be diversity in the higher education system.

5.    System should be based on vocation educational in higher education. It should be based on choice of student as vertical option.

6.    University has a higher obligation towards school education.

7.    In last 67 years we have done fairly well. We should not be apologetic towards any drawback in this system. We should not be bothered about criticism but arrogance is dangerous. We should be worry of shortcoming and try to improve them continuously.

8.    There is too much regional imbalance in higher education. In some region the gross enrolment ratio is equal to UK but in some it is as low to 6.5%.

9.    We are in dilemma of quality vs. quantity. Standards are falling and we are facing acute shortage of faculty members (which is not permanent problem)

10.  Dissolve boundaries of various discipline. Go for inter disciplinary research and teaching.

11.  Public funding is not much enough in higher education system. We can discuss on this issue also.

12.  Question to a faculty member:

a.    Are you using the available resourced properly?

b.    Are you fulfilling your responsibility towards society?

c.    Are you keeping yourself update with daily development?

13.  Private sector has an important role in higher education system. 42% of total universities are in private hands while 58% of total students study in private universities and institutions.

14.  He discussed Yashpal Committee Report.

15.  Majority of curriculum are required to revise. Three major things to take care while revision of curriculum:

a.    Each curriculum must include analytical reasoning (any discipline)

b.    Synthetic Coordination

c.    It must create a new knowledge

16.  Too much emphasis is given nowadays on research but good teaching is also required.

17.  Research require

a.    Basic research

b.    Translation research and

c.    Transition research

and moreover inter-disciplinary research is required

18.  Accreditation: Not only institutes and universities are required accreditation now program accreditation is need of time. (We have introduced National Higher Education Qualification Framework).

19.  Research University: It must be a complete university with multiple societal roles. What we require a great scholar or great manager for such universities?

20.  Professor must be competitive and collaborative. And he should be given more autonomy of decision making.

21.  Internationalization of Indian Higher Education System is not advisable.

22.  Why do we outsource the accreditation body from outside, why can't we have our own accreditation body? Can we think of our own ranking system for university, institutes and journal and research?

23.  At the end Five Question to a Faculty Member:

a.    Where do we stand today?

b.    What has worked and not worked for me?

c.    Where do you want to see yourself after 5 years?

d.    Should we do against our own principles?

e.    Shall we adopt to apply multiple disciplinary approach?
