I guess the private expenditure for general education in branded schools including coaching class expenses (varies from 5-10 lakhs) is higher than the professional education
A lady remarked in an assembly held sometimes in 1977 in IIT, Kanpur regarding private education (self-funding) that had she known the professional education is cheaper than the general education she would have given birth to more than one son! Her son was admitted in Pantnagar for a technical degree programme with fees as good as Rs 20000 pa then, today it varies in the range Rs 60000 to Rs. 2 lakhs.
And mind well, in all public and private professional institutes, fees in case of over 60% students is reimbursed by the Govt under various categories like SC/ST/OBC/Minorities/EBC, etc! Are not all these then the public funded institutes beneficial to certain classes?

Subject: [MTC Global] The cost of getting a (decent) education in India is skyrocketing
Millions of Indian parents are, quite literally, paying the price for the country's abysmal education system.
Between 2008 and 2014, the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) reported last week, the average annual private expenditure for general education (primary level to post graduation and above) has shot up by a staggering 175% to Rs6,788 per student.
During the same period, the annual cost of professional and technical education has increased by 96% to Rs62,841 per student.
