I have had a different experience. One of the fellow industries suggested that I send my students and faculty to their production facility for an industrial visit. Let them go around and ask as many questions as possible. Based on this visit, if any faculty and group of students can make a proposal of consultancy or research in a particular area, expected outcomes and costs involved, he would be willing to award the assignment if he was convinced with the proposal. I passed on the idea to all students and faculty members and suggested that willing students and faculty members could form the group for industrial visit of full day to the said industry. I never got a taker for the proposal.

Subject: Re: [MTC Global] Diversity in teaching
I think we should revisit the say " how many corporates are ready to give projects to faculties, when they measure the quality of institute and faculties by the students they recruit from the institute".
- Good placement by and large speaks about the quality of both institute and students. The institute's brand is built up by faculties, individual achievement and/or team achievement.
- Corporate are after money making. those who could help them attain this, corporate is ever ready with red carpet.
- If an individual faculty, in particular, or a team of faculties in general, is capable enough to create their own brand for industry; industry will be after them. I have helped industries to improve their productivity and offered my services almost free, e.g.TISCO Jamdetpur,L & T, Powai, Mumbai,KB Ltd, Kirloskarwadi,Dhebewadi, Delstar,Ogalewadi, etc. Recently I have completed Greaves Crompton Engine Assembly Line Balancing issue as a part of my ME student's project work. With 6 months toil we have attained 288 Engines/shift as against 250 that is going to fetch Rs. 3.5 crore pa estimated profit.
- we need to develop a suitable working culture in professional institutes. In 2000 AD, AICTE identified teaching (theory and practical), R&D; consultancy,Continuing Education Programmes and Co-curricular activities. Research does not mean only big specious labs, or a batallion of PhD degree holders. Research culture starts developing from small things, almost no investment except commitment, working beyond hours, etc. I can state with confidence that our faculties can happily save our resources to the tune 10-15%even improving upon bottom things both in production and service sector. But we need to develop such a research culture, a gradually on-going process over a period of time. It is not at all an overnight phenomenon, not a magic wand.
- Our faculties is a rich treasure. Exploring it is neither the demand of profession nor the urge of those involved. Due to industrial revolutions, advanced countries have carfully designed seamless institute-industry partnership/structure. Such practices as tenure contract for faculty and giving next tenure based on such things as revenue generation, research, etc.in the preceding tenure, are adopted in the larger interest of every one.
Hence in the national interests, in the interests of you and I, let us develop a conducive academic and research environment in our institutes.

The thought of faculty doing consultancy sounds good.
But we need to understand how many corporates are ready to give projects to faculties, when they measure the quality of institute and facultiess by the students they recruit from the institute.
More over it requires a different mind set for the institutes to spend on faculty development and develope faculties to take up consultancy.
In case of faculties who manage to get consultancy project on their own, the institutes dont hesitate to ask for profit sharing without contributing any resources.

Diversity in teaching. Faculty should not depend only on salary. It makes one vulnerable. Faculty need to engage in consultancy, MDP , industry sponsored project, paid research etc. Someone said, each faculty should be an entrepreneur too so that synergetic effect and knowledge transfer can happen. This is a radical thought but already taking shape....
