In my childhood many a time I would respond to many extravagant demands with a one liner," Kya Be Tata Birla Hain Kya?" (Are you Tata or Birla). This connects to just one base thought, one that connects infinite wealth to the brand of TATA and the Tata family.
Well this story is about one man who was pivotal in reshaping the family's fortune and making Tata Industries what it is today. But this is not about his business decisions or his financial prowess. This is about his choices and his character.
These are the five things that were done by Ratan Tata which make us proud of the Indian tycoon:

After studying at some of the most prestigious schools and colleges across the world, he got an Advanced Management Program degree from Harvard Business School, US in 1975. Then IBM offered him a job. But he rejected that to come back home and work in India.

Though he was family, he didn't get a lucrative job right from the onset. He started working on the lower rungs and gradually climbed up the ladder until he became the chairman of Tata group in 1991. From a blue collar worker with great ideas to a business icon with legendary leadership skills.
#3 He took Indian auto industry to the world
Be it the revamp and success of Tata Motors, export of vehicles of acquisition of British legends Landrover and Jaguar - he led an automotive revolution for India. Did we fail to mention Tata Nano - the cheapest car in the world?
#4 Countless honours from numerous prestigious institutions worldwide

Apart from being a Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan, he also was bestowed with 'Most Excellent Order of the British Empire' in 2009. This is apart from the tens of honours he has got from various universities and governments across the world.

Few months after 26/11, Taj group of Hotels owned by TATAs launched their biggest tender ever for remodeling all their Hotels.
in India and abroad. Some of the companies who applied for that tender were also Pakistanis. To make their bid stronger, two big industrialists from Pakistan visited Bombay House ( Head office of Tata ) in Mumbai without an appointment to meet up with Ratan Tata since he was not giving them any prior appointment. They were made to sit at the reception of Bombay house and after a few hours a message was conveyed to them that Ratan Tata is busy and can not meet anyone without an appointment.
Frustrated, these two Paki industrialists went to Delhi and thru their High Commission met up with a Minister. Then Congress minister Anand Sharma immediately called up Ratan Tata requesting him to meet up with the two Pakistani Industrialists and consider their tender "enthusiastically ".
Ratan Tata replied..."you could be shameless, I am not" and put the phone down.
Few months later when Pakistani government placed an order of Tata Sumos to be imported into Pakistan, Ratan Tata refused to ship a single vehicle to that country. This is the respect and love for motherland that Ratan Tata has. Something that our current Politicians should learn from.

Ratan Tata has invested his personal wealth into many young organisations and has always promoted young entrepreneurs and their ideas.
