Re: [MTC Global] Consider open-book tests in board exams, don't give grace marks: HRD ministry to education boards

This is the outcome of our education pattern including coaching classes, exam. scoring technique, etc. Please Note:

  1. Before 1970s, most of the universities used to include under "Instructions (to candidates)" as Your paper will be valued as a whole. I remember the case of one of my friend who appeared for MSc (Applied Mathematics) exam. of the Shivaji University, Kolhapur and he solved one bit (out of 2 ) of a single question and scored 97 marks out of 100, The length of the answer book  for this bit was 49 pages! The question paper had 8 questions, Section A and B each with 4 questions. A candidate is required to solve any three questions from each Section total max. marks 100, with the above said instruction.
  2. During 1976-95, I experimented with open book exam.several times, the results were mixed. Those students who had adopted independent study technique (self preparation based on class room teaching) scored well.

Seen as significant move in the direction of changing assessment pattern in the school exams, the Union Human Resource Development Ministry has urged all the state and central boards to consider the proposal of implementation of open-book tests in secondary- and senior secondary-level examinations.
