Cameroon : Fundong Court sentenced two year old baby and mother for causing harm on Baba Ahmadou Danpullo's cows, as Esu denied his land tittle
Photo From right to left late And present Esu Fon.base DapulloEvents in the village of Baicham in Belo Sub Division in Boyo Division, North West Region exposed the challenges and obstacles to the rule of law in the Cameroon judicial system as an otherwise isolated incident brought to focus the assertion that justice in Cameroon may be bought and sold to the highest bidder.
Last March 2015 The District Officer for Belo Sub Division descended on the village of Baicham accompanied by Police Officers and in pure military tradition, whisked off some five youths from the village to a detention facility. They were later charged by the court in Fundong a few days after on grounds that they have contemplated causing harm and suffering to five cows belonging to Elba Ranch owned by Alhadji Baba Danpulo.The claim which is based on Section 268[1] of the Cameroon Penal Code is later modified and amended following Section 316 of the Criminal Procedure Code to mean that the five accused were actively involved in poisoning the Elba Ranch cows and hurriedly sentenced them to one year imprisonment with a fine of $2000.
Though the accused; Diangha Cyprian, Asama Magdalene, Tifuh Ferdinand, Obet Ebea, and Neng Mercy presented evidence to their innocence, the Fundong Court sentenced them for causing destruction to cows. Not even evidence of a medical certificate that one of the accused was hospitalized at the time the supposed crime was said to have been committed,the court found them guilty. One of the accused, a women who is baby-sitting a two year old child, and through whom the alarm of cows destroying villagers' crops was raised, was sentenced along with the baby.
The story goes that this woman on the evening before that fateful day raised an alarm after discovering that cows from the Elba Ranch had broken loose and were destroying crops in farms in this essentially agricultural community. Some people had come to help her push back the cows and given that such destruction is a constant occurrence in that community without the Ranch owner ever bordering to apologize or to compensate the farmers, one voice was heard in the night threatening that if such destruction ever occurs in that village again, he would teach the herdsmen a lesson. Informed of the supposed threat, the Ranch Owner urged the district officer to descend on the village and arrest any suspects for sanctioning. In a bid to lean credence to the charge, the Court in Fundong had to go down memory lane to accuse the five of having begun the systematic poisoning and killing of Alhadji Baba's cows with impunity way back in December 2014.
If such travesty of justice was isolated to the case of Baicham, there would have been no cause for concern. When such instances are a daily occurrence where the wealthy systematically have their way in the judicial system, there is reason to be worried. By the close of 2015, the same scenario was reported in yet another North West village, Esu, which is also agriculturally inclined. Although it may have nothing to offer an ordinary investor, the same owner of Elba Ranch since developed a large appetite for its large expanse of fertile and grazing land.

If it is true that all points of exchange between Joseph Beti Assomo and Saban Umut have not been made public, it is at least known that the Turkish delegation to stay in Cameroon puts an emphasis on the security aspect. Rene Claude Meka as the Chief of Staff of the armed forces and Jean Baptiste Bokam Secretary of State for Defense in charge of the Gendarmerie had already received respectively Saban Umut who is in reality the Sub-Secretary of State for Industry of Turkish ministry of defense.
In the agenda of the Turkish, we also noted the visit of the central laboratory equipment. Demonstrations were made there to the great satisfaction of Cameroonian hosts. The General of the Turkish division also inquired on the problems facing the Cameroonian army. We learn that he promised support of his country to meet some difficulties. He also said that he will see "on the training of police officers on dealing with terrorist attacks regarding scientific and technical police and security arrangements and prevention of attacks."
On March 1st, the Turkish delegation went to Garoua to visit the cartridge factory in the region. This 2 March in Yaounde they took part in the meeting of experts of the bipartisan commission to the agreement of the arms industry.
