A new front is being opened in the ongoing battle to rein in the perceived many excesses and lawlessness embodied in routine the governance of Nigeria since the imposition of unification and unitary government fifty years ago. The 1st Republic's 5 constitutions were abrogated and the 4 semi-autonomous regions arbitrarily divvied up into 36 states and a Federal Capital Territory that depend on monthly handouts from Abuja in order to survive. Because political power resided with Northern Nigeria, which boasts of a Muslim majority, gradual but consistent steps have been taken by the country's unitary government to Islamize the country through administrative fiat.
Dr. Nwnakwo Tony Nwaezeigwe, a historical researcher and writer, is the Director of Igbo Studies, University of Nigeria, Nsukka. He has teamed up with the Nigeria Civil War and Genocide Research Network to bring a landmark lawsuit against the Government of Nigeria with the goal of arresting and reversing the Islamization of the country by the unitary central government in Abuja. Many have talked around the subject of Islamization of Nigeria which went into high gear during the decades of autocratic military dictatorship that preceded the 4th Republic. But this is possibly the first time that a concerted effort is being made to use the judicial system to restrain the central government from blatant violation of the constitution which declares that Nigeria shall not have an official religion. A mega legal drama is poised to unfurl before all - for both Nigerian and and international audiences alike............
The battle line has been drawn in Asaba, the capital city of Delta state and it passes through the Federal High Court of Nigeria in the Asaba Judicial Division. On one side of the battle line are the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Attorney General of the Federation, the President of the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Speaker, House of Representatives of Federal Republic of Nigeria and the National Assembly as defendants.
