[MTC Global] Budget session: Key highlights of President’s speech

New Delhi: President Pranab Mukherjee addressed the joint sitting of Parliament on Tuesday ahead of the budget session. Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed "hope for discussion on many issues" while interacting with reporters outside Parliament.

Here are major highlights of the President's budget session speech:

■ My government is committed to providing shelter to every houseless with appropriate interest subvention, reports PTI.

■ 11,000 of 18,000 villages, which were in darkness since independence, were electrified in record time, says President, reports PTI.

■ 37% of 1.5 crore beneficiaries of Ujjwala scheme to provide free LPG cylinder to the poor, belong to the SC/ST category, reports PTI.

■ SwachhBharat mission has become a 'Jan Andolan', reports DD News.

■ Close to 13 crore poor have been covered under various social security schemes, reports DD News.

■ An unprecedented 26 crore plus Jan Dhan accounts have been opened for the unbanked, reports DD News.

■ Over 20 lakh youth have benefitted from the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana, said President Mukherjee, PTIreports.

■ The government is guided by the Antyodaya philosophy of Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya, reports DD News.

■ Core philosophy of the government is upliftment of poor and deprived. Financial inclusion is key to poverty alleviation, DD News reports.

■ Over Rs2 trillion has been provided through 5.6 crore loans sanctioned under Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana, reports DD News.

■ Under Deen Dayal Antyodaya Yojana, over Rs16,000 crore have been made available to self-help groups in the current financial year, reports DD News.

■ At the core of the government's policies is the welfare of garibdalitpeeditshoshitvanchitkisanshramik and yuva, reports DD News.

■ A nationwide network of 50 India International Skill Centres is being established with the objective of providing training of global standards to the youth, PTI reports.

■ My government is committed to provide shelter to every houseless poor household through the Pradhan Mantri Aawas Yojana, reports DD News.

■ Mission Indradhanush commits to vaccinate "every child everywhere" against preventable diseases, DD Newsreports.

■ Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana will make clean energy accessible to the poor, reports DD News.

■ With motto of "Har Haath ko Hunar", the government has taken several steps for skilling youth and improving their employability, reports DD News. Pradhan Mantri YUVA Yojana launched for promoting entrepreneurship education and training amongst 7 lakh students.

■ The government is committed to social and economic equality for the deprived and underprivileged sections as enshrined in the Constitution, said President Mukherjee, PTI reports.

■ Through the Stand-Up India initiative, the government plans to empower over 2.5 lakh SCs, STs and women entrepreneurs, said the President, PTI reports.

■ By year-end, all the meter gauge tracks in the north-east will be converted into broad gauge lines, said President, PTIreports. Under its proactive "Act East" policy, my government is focussing on reducing isolation of the eastern region and north-east, reports DD News.

■ To combat black money, corruption, counterfeit currency, terror financing, government decided to demonetise old currency notes, said President, reports PTI.

■ India gave a befitting reply to repeated incursions by conducting successful surgical strikes, said President. Infiltration attempts, terror incidents, loss of lives in J&K is a matter of grave concern, the President said, while also highlighting that India will actively collaborate with other nations to decisively defeat terrorism, PTI reports. Left-wing extremism has been contained and security situation in the north-east has also improved significantly.

■ President Mukherjee also called for constructive debate on simultaneous elections to the Lok Sabha and assemblies and funding of elections in his speech, reports PTI.

■ The government is committed to providing the Divyang jan equal opportunities for development. The Sugamya Bharat Abhiyan is improving accessibility for the Divyang jan at public places. Over 6 lakh Divyang jan have so far benefitted from 4,700 special assistance camps organised since May 2014., reports DD News.

■ President Pranab Mukherjee also said that the National Civil Aviation Policy, will give a major boost to air connectivity in the smaller cities and towns, reports DD News.

■ Universal Account Number has ensured portability of EPF accounts and has safeguarded the interest of crores of workers, said President Mukherjee, DD News reports.

■ President Mukherjee also said that our women deserve equal opportunity. Beti Bachao Beti Padhao scheme is yielding encouraging results. Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan will provide comprehensive ante-natal care to all pregnant women. My government is making Nari Shakti an integral part of our development journey, reports DD News.

■ A favourable monsoon supplemented by farmer-oriented schemes has increased the acreage and yield of most Kharif crops. Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana expanded ambit of risk-coverage, doubled sum insured & facilitated lowest-ever premium, reports DD News.
