Re: [MTC Global] [Weekend Big Debate-I] Has the library outlived its usefulness in the age of Internet?

With advancement of tech-savvy gen-next and up gradations taking place in available technologies Libraries would be relegated to Lap-tops and E-Notes. Many Institutions too have started sharing of notes on Whatsapp and other social media sites in groups formulations for a particular subject. So long as it serves the purpose of education and pursued with right intent, I guess it is O.K.
I would very much agree with Prof. Goel's ideas and experiments in preservation of Old Libraries. I have had many run-ins in Libraries in Gujarat, Maharashtra & even in Delhi ( there is one opposite the KB's outlet in Hauz Khas Market ). The Librarian is duty bound to create and sustain the interest of the visitors by active collaboration and not just being robotical in lending and receiving work. At time even simple Ideas do great wonders and give very good results. Though Librarians in most colleges are appointed when they have requisite qualification: D.Lib/M.L.S - the management also look for M.Phil and PHD in Library science,documentation/archives & manuscript keeping, computerization and information science.
But the main and important element is passion for work. If you have knowledge and are willing to share and educate others then you get some satisfaction too.

Recent times, we see very less footfall in library and institutions are worried about how to ensure students and faculty visit regularly library. Library is the heart of any institution and we need to ensure  its usefulness

Has the library outlived its usefulness in the age of Internet?
