Re: [MTC Global] Mission and Vision; Clarity

Mission and vision statements have been seen hanging on walls of the organisations. Only visitors reads it seriously, sporadically employees and management talks about it.. 

These two words are like promising ourselves before we promise to clients/customers via numerous advertisements. Have we fulfilled these promises/are we trying to fulfill? or are we really bothered about it ? Our nation would have been called a developed nation if those two words were given prominence, unfortunately there is less or no concern given to it.

Mission represents the Core Purpose for which an organisation exists. It transcends the boundary of time. It doesn't change in face of regular challenges or business exigencies …. Only a complete directional change will influence the Mission Statement

 

Vision represents longer horizon yet remain time-bound. It may get quantified for a given period. Remains flexible and course correction is agreeable.

To me Vision and mission in the simplest words are:

Vision:
Where we want to be
mission:
What are we.

We need to be very clear about such terms as:

  1. Purpose, aim, objective and goal. In a true sense mission represents much beyond merely "purpose", e;g.; missionary no doubt achieves the purpose of not only the human service but also goes beyond it.
  2. Outcomes and objectives.
  3. Programme education objectives, Mission objectives, Programme objectives.
  4. Course outcome, learning outcome.
  5. Value Statement
  6. Quality Policy
  7. Academic philosophy. etc.

I have come across many a times about the Mission and Vision statements.

I understand still many professional do not understand What is Mission and Vision.

 

I strongly recommend professional to read the following books to have clear idea about Mission and Vision.

Purpose captures the soul of the organization. Purpose gets at the deeper reasons for an organization's existence beyond just making money.

Its self-identity consistent through time and transcends market life cycles, technological breakthroughs, management fads and individual leaders.

Why do we run the Organization?

To guide and inspire people inside the organization

 Mission gives Direction – continually pursues but never fully achieves or completes its purpose.

"This who we are; this is what we stand for; this is what we are all about"

Examples for an Engineering College Purpose- Discovery process:

ü  To prepare the engineers to live and to face the challenges and opportunities in the work place

ü  To prepare the engineers to compete in the world markets in the "Knowledge Age"  as engineering leaders and global citizens.

ü  To implement the teaching learning and assessment process that move a student from one state of knowledge and professional preparation to another state.

ü  To provide and facilitate lifelong learning opportunities of the highest quality

ü  To continually improve the faculty skill sets with those needed to deliver the desired curriculum in the light of the different learning styles of students.

ü  To give a basic understanding of business process  and organizations

ü

Vision: Creative Process : Task is to create future NOT to predict the future

Vision has become one of the most overused – and less understood- word in the language.  The word vision conjures up all kinds of images.  We think of outstanding achievements. We think of audacious, exhilarating goals that galvanize people. All of us know vision is important, but what exactly is it?

It can truly be said that happens until there is vision. But it is equally true that a vision with no underlying sense of purpose (Mission), no calling, is just a good idea – all "sound and fury, signifying nothing".

What do we want to create within next three years / five years /ten years?

      The picture of the envisioned future we seek to CREATE

      Specific destination –once we reach, we have to change

      Far more important to know who we are than where we are going,

            for where we are going will certainly changes as the world about us changes

"what we aspire to become, to achieve, to create"  that will require significant change and progress to attain

Thinking beyond the current capabilities of the college, current environments trends, forces, and  conditions.

Creative Questions:

      Does it get our juices flowing?

      Do we find it stimulating?

      Does it stimulate forward momentum?

      Does it get people going?

In next 5/10/15/20 years

      What would we love to see?

      What would SAMCET look like?

      What would it feel like to staff and students?

      What would it have achieved?

Examples:

      to create an environment where teachers and students can feel the joy of student – centered teaching learning process.  

      to create an intellectually enriched environment that empowers learners to transform their lives.

      to merge the physical, life, and information sciences when working at the micro and nano scales and to conceive, design, and operate engineering systems of greater complexity.

      to create a work environment where students and staff feel valued, and encouraged to do what they are good at all the time.
