Yes, in US student examine the ROI when they pursue higher education. Parents are not always the source of funding. Students work P/T as well study and make use of all sorts of funding and resources available to them to pay for their education. The US job market is also very different. Degrees necessarily do not translate into a well-paying job or a career. In addition to a degree, It is the skill set a person brings.
In the Indian context, there is a huge disconnect between degrees, skill set, and the real job market. Although some universities are trying to close this gap but youth unemployment is many states is staggering.
