Thank you Dr. Yadnyaveerji for sharing very thought provoking articles on "Science and Development" written by IIT Professors. My take is:
- Why man is after development? Man lives mostly an artificial life, a result of man-made systems, like, education, transport, security, etc. These systems are meant for attaining more and more man's well-fare and well-being. This can be achieved using the tool (again man-made) called "development".
- Development is achieved not only through science/engineering/technology but equally through Arts. Universities/Institutes are founded by man, a means where both Science (pure and applied) and Arts will grow in the ultimate usefulness/evolution of man. Thus, institute is a seat of learning, a power house of ideas that do good to both existing community and their future generations to come.In fact, "usefulness" of science/Arts to man is the main criterion or yardstick for development. Usefulness in two terms: worldly affairs and beyond (spiritual).
- Research is recognized the only single tool for development and growth.
- But here lies the key: what type of research? Community oriented, publication or self-promotional oriented or a combination of both?
- The advanced countries have been generating community oriented research that has resulted in to world Class Universities, advancement in Science and Technology, improving happiness index, economic and military superpower, a chain of Noble prize winners, etc. For such an all round development in mind, advanced countries have geared up their resources like R & D, education, ethics, HR, etc.
- Autonomy, decentralization, performance monitoring (fixation of accountability and punishment for defaulters) , not to spare errant, are found to be wonderful tools in the whole exercise of development.
- Unfortunately, in India we have hardly developed any tool based on Indian research and soil. We are happy and feel sometimes to be proud copying others blindly, may be curriculum, decentralization, autonomy, JEE, NEET, GATE, UPSC Civil services competitive exams., CBCS, dual degree prg, and what not. Many a times I think we are still in a slave mind state, totally divorced from independent thinking akin to the Indian soil and public.
- Autonomy, decentralization, R&D, science and development, etc., have failed in India as we are not clear about our vision, the ultimate goal: good of Indians, one and all. Obviously the R & D carried out in IITs, IIMS, NITs, etc., is of little contribution/relevance to society welfare as a whole. I fear even decentralization will not work in India as we are far away from the spirit.
